ABOUT THE REX
Located in the Historic Downtown Area of Galax, Virginia, the Rex Theater first opened it’s doors in 1940. Today, the Rex Theater is a “live music” venue featuring a wide variety of local, regional, and national acts.
Historically a center for furniture manufacturing, Galax, Virginia is also known as a center of traditional “old-time” music and musicians.
In 1940, the town of Galax was excited when the historic Rex Theater first opened it’s doors and the public rushed in. Operating as the only movie theater in the twin county area, many area youngsters and families grew up going to the Rex to see the latest Hollywood blockbusters.
Since 1940, the Rex has served as many things to the Galax community. Today, it is owned by the City of Galax, who has renovated it and made it an important part of the officially designated Historical Downtown area.

Besides being a beautiful venue for a variety of local, regional, and national music acts, the Rex is also home to “Blue Ridge Backroads Live,” a weekly radio show featuring Old Time and Bluegrass bands broadcast live by a local radio station, Classic Country 98.1 FM. This broadcast is heard in five states. It can also be listened to “live” on the internet.

For the last 80 years the Rex has entertained both the citizens of Galax and visitor’s from all over the world. Recently receiving extensive renovations, it is now poised for even bigger things in the next 80 years.
